The Bird Trail is an exclusive, educational hiking route to a protected area – the Tyrai swamp located in the Kliošiai landscape reserve. From 1 April to 31 August, visits to nature reserves are limited, so the marked trails provide excellent conditions for being in nature safely without harming the flora and fauna.
The trail starts at the Dreverna port, runs through the village of Dreverna and continues along the embankment to the Strykis homestead. Then, after walking along the street, you can reach the Tyrai walking path, which starts off the main road and continues along King Wilhelm Canal, winding through an old forest, turning into a swamp and reaching waterlogged floodplain meadows. At the end of the trail, a newly built observation tower will allow you to enjoy the unique views of the Curonian Lagoon and the sand dunes of the Curonian Spit.
Travelling along this signposted trail, tourists have a great opportunity to visit protected areas, get to know three different ecosystems (forest, swamp and meadow) and hear the songs of birds that are characteristic of the seacoast. You just need to scan the QR code when you see the plate with the image of the bird. By downloading the BirdNET app to your smartphone, you will not only be able to listen to the sound of birds marked on the trails, but you will also be able to hear them in the wild.
The length of the educational trail to the Tyrai swamp is 14 kilometres (both ways). The trail is for pedestrians and is suitable for the whole family. When walking along the trail, we recommend following the directional signs.
Recommendations of the Klaipėda District Tourism Information Centre:
- Listen to bird sounds with headphones.
- Download the free bird recognition app BirdNET to your smartphone, which will help you better recognise the birds you hear (for Android and iOS operating systems).
- Book an excursion with a birdwatching tour guide and ornithologist (contact details: +370 638 01820, www.alcedowildlife.com, boris.belchev@alcedowildlife.com).
- Wear comfortable, waterproof footwear and a head cover and bring a water bottle on your hike.
- Refrain from making loud noises.
- Protect and respect the environment and do not litter, as garbage and other traces of human recreation leave a stain on nature.
